Brad has accumulated 30 years of experience in Electrical Engineering Design. He provides a pivotal role within the business by building strong working relationships with clients, and treating their projects like his own.  In all aspects of design, he is committed to providing successful resolution of conflicts arising in power designs with all other civil services.

Proactively working with clients to problem solve and provide innovative solutions, Brad has been able to ensure excellent outcomes for the clients. He is fully conversant with all utility’s policies and procedures relating to the electricity and communication distribution industry that allows UPD to provide a value-added service to our clients. 

Brad is across all areas of UPD, its projects, and clients ensuring that its staff exceeds expectations and delivers quality results. He also works closely with the clients on-site to ensure the successful completion of the clients’ projects.

Peter Brazendale is one of our senior electrical engineers and joined us eleven years ago after a thirty eight career with Western Power. Peter has extensive experience on distribution networks and was the Distribution Design Manager for Western Power, running a fully integrated distribution design branch of over one hundred staff members. Peter is a chartered professional engineer who is registered on the National Professional Engineers Register.

Laurie is a leader in the electrical industry with career spanning over forty years that includes executive, leadership and technical roles within Horizon Power, Western Power, Sinclair Night Merz and KPMG.  Laurie has been responsible for strategic and operational network engineering, planning & design at the highest level. 

With experience in risk assessment and management, asset management, stakeholder engagement and crisis management, Laurie’s outstanding leadership and communication skills have enabled him to lead organisations through significant change whilst meeting strategical and operational milestones allowing him a fit-for-purpose perspective when consulting to clients on their project needs.

Erich has an extensive and global career with fifty seven plus years’ experience working on a broad range of projects including consulting and design to Western Power and Horizon Power. Erich has specialised knowledge and experience in specification, systems design, procurement initiation, inspection, testing, installation supervision and commissioning of L.V  and M.V. Industrial distribution systems up to 33kV (including substation and overhead line design, fault current calculations, protection grading, systems stability harmonic penetration-studies, earthing and lightning protection design).  L.V. and M.V. Motor Control Centres. Industrial interlocking and control systems (hard-wired and programmable). Prime, stand-by power and co-generation diesel, gas, wind & solar generating systems for generating stations, industrial/process plants, utilities and underground mines.  Electrical equipment and installation techniques in hazardous areas.  Industrial lighting, earthing and lightning protection.

Max Liu

Taz has a Bachelor’s of Technology in Electrical Engineering, specialising in Electrical Power Systems and Renewable Energy Systems. Experienced with delivering civil, electrical and lighting designs, Taz is passionate about energy transformation and integrating renewable energy sources on the electricity grid, with a keen eye for distribution design and Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS). Proficient with various engineering drafting and modelling softwares such as AutoCAD, Microstation, Solidworks, Streets, PowerFactory, Control Expert, ETAP, LVDesign alongside PLC and SCADA programming.

UPD has curated a highly experienced group of designers, draftspersons and support staff with a strong project management pedigree allowing the diverse team to deliver a process-oriented and project management focused approach to scoping, design delivery and construction supervision.
Whilst UPD can deliver this approach from every desk, we also have a designated Project Manager to partner with clients to deliver more complex projects.

Bill has had a unique, varied, and rewarding career of over 27 years in a senior management capacity in the property development industry. This was preceded by his gaining an Engineering Surveying qualification and a 14 year career in diverse disciplines of local government engineering and contract management.  He has held a variety of roles include working on behalf of private developers, and providing consultancy services to engineering consultants, government agencies, and private clients.  Bill engages with our clients on residential, commercial and large-scale projects, navigating them through the processes to ensure they receive required outcomes.

Len Franklin

Senior Electrical Consultant

Len has been a valuable part of the Underground Power Development team for the past 20 years. His experience in Western Power from Linesman to cable jointer, HV switching operator to Field Supervisor has placed him in good stead for providing the liaison skills required to coordinate between Western Power Construction Managers and the Contractors working to install underground power systems on behalf of the developers.

Keith is a highly experienced consultant who works closes with UPD’s NBN network designers and civil construction installers to ensure UPD’s designs are installed to NBN Co and Opticomm standards and specifications.  Keith provides real-time support and solutions during construction and works towards gaining the best outcomes for all stakeholders.

Bob Gaffney

Bob has over 20 years within Western Power which included cable testing and commissioning final testing of subdivisions to ensure cable installation integrity. Cable jointing HV and LV, Fault finding, location and repairs of damaged cables, earthing, upgrading the earthing grid and installing earthing to new substations, switchyards and overhead assets. 

Bob also worked within Networks Design, working with engineers for system reinforcement and designing the structures to achieve the desired outcomes.  He was also a Technical Quality Team Leader, leading a specialised team that covered all aspects of Western Powers assets from overhead poles and wires to underground cables and earthing. This included assisting with the Underground Distribution Schemes and Construction Manuals. 

Bob was also involved with the upgrade, maintenance and inspections of all switchyards reclosers and regulators within the SWIS network and with customer design  for MP and SP projects, providing basic designs for customer upgrades and SR projects including issuing quote letters and invoicing.

Design and Drafting Team

Our drafting team works together to provide the most efficient procedures to produce the drawings required. With a combined 100+ years of experience, they have extensive training and knowledge of software systems, which are used to produce electrical designs. The background in civil design and cartography complements the electrical knowledge in our office.

Damian Twyman

Senior Designer

Damian is a senior electrical design/draftsperson with over 24 years’ involvement in the land development industry in WA with both Western Power and Horizon Power. He has significant experience in managing and designing all types of projects including road upgrades, undergrounding of existing services, and installation of new u/g assets, feasibilities, cost estimates, load assessments and Western Power Design Quotation Applications.

Damian has extensive knowledge in both Microstation and Autocad drafting packages, as well as AGI32 lighting design software used for roadway lighting AS1158 compliance. He likes to ensure that the electrical aspects of all projects are designed in such a way that minimises costs and delays for the client as much as possible.

Stewart Tassell

Stewart is an experienced Project Manager and Draftsperson with over thirty years of experience leading teams in digital cartography for large-scale urban and rural subdivisions developments with proficiency in governmental department procedures.  He has extensive knowledge of conventional cartography, CAD design, surveying and mapping technology, house building set-outs, re-peg and survey drafting, cartographic designs, and the production of sales and site plans.

Brendan joined UPD in early 2024 with over six years of drafting experience gained within France and Canada creating, designing and drafting electrical solutions for large scale commercial, industrial and residential projects.

Komang is a trained Architect with qualifications in engineering technology.  Komang has gained experience designing and drafting nbn network communication solutions, electrical and mechanical installations along with scheduling & estimating.

Kieran Peters

Kieran has 4+ years of experience in electrical designing and is qualified with an Advanced Diploma in Electrical Engineering.

Kieran is able to produce accurate AutoCAD drawings with attention to detail. Experience includes, electrical and communication designs for subdivisions, upgrading existing sites, P and V category lighting calculations and design for major roads, Single Line Diagrams (SLDs) (eg. main switch boards, distribution boards, general and typical SLDs), lighting and power layouts, site layouts (eg, power and communications conduits and pits) and outdoor lighting layouts.

Kieran’s previous jobs at 3E and ETC has given him experience with western power and telecommunications designs.

Michael Vu

Michael is an experienced project administrator with three years of experience providing office support. Besides providing office support for the engineering staff, Michael completes the requirements to start the project up and get it ready for the design team. In addition to this, he liaises with clients to understand their requirements and keep them updated on the progress of their projects. He also manages the project inspection booking with Western Power to ensure projects can be handed over. Michael also has experience with bookkeeping and assists the accounts team as required.

Anne Wilkinson

Jasmine Carson

Jasmine is an experienced administrator with 4 years’ experience in Local Government organisations, primarily in the Human Resources and Governance departments. Jasmine is responsible for coordinating projects and facilitating clients requests.  Jasmine also the process leader for UPD’s archival processes as well as assisting with providing administration support to the project team & UPD leadership.

Kenny Renju

Kenny joined UPD in early 2024 to coordinate and provide support to the business with day to day business and project administration as well as supporting UPD’s leaders to meet their goals. 

Simone Wroe

Simone is an experienced administrator with a background in federal and state government, defence and mining. She is responsible for the day to day administration of UPD’s busy office and is the first touch-point for most clients to experience UPD’s excellent customer service.
